Vinod Khosla

Born in Delhi, India in 1955, Khosla obtained his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. He then immigrated to the United States, where he earned a master’s degree in biomedicine from Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA from Stanford University

Vinod Khosla is an Indian-American entrepreneur and venture capitalist. He is one of the co-founders of Sun Microsystems, a company that created the Network File System (NFS). Khosla worked at Sun for many years, serving as its first chairperson and CEO before becoming a venture capitalist.

Khosla began his career in venture capitalism with the well-known venture firm Kleiner Perkins. He has since founded his own venture capital firm, Khosla Ventures, focusing on venture investments in various technology sectors.

He invests in a variety of sectors, including clean technology, the Internet, software, biotechnology and mobile technology. His most notable investments include Square, Jawbone and Instacart.

Known for its passion for environmental sustainability, Khosla has made significant investments in clean technology and advocates the use of technology to solve major environmental problems. He has been praised for his contributions to the technology industry and his philanthropy. As of September 2021, my knowledge is that Vinod Khosla remains active in his venture firm, working to develop new technologies.

Ratan Tata

Born in the Tata family on December 28, 1937, he grew up as part of this family that founded the Tata Group. He received a bachelor’s degree in architecture and structural engineering from Cornell University in 1962 and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 1975.

Ratan Tata is an honorary graduate of IIT Bombay and served as Chairperson of the Tata Group. Under his leadership, the Tata Group achieved success in a wide variety of industries and contributed significantly to India’s economic development.

He is a prominent Indian industrialist and philanthropist known for leading the Tata Group, one of India’s largest and oldest conglomerates, with interests in industries such as IT, telecommunications, steel and automotive.

Tata began his career with the Tata Group in 1961 and became chairperson of Tata Sons, the holding company for the conglomerate, in 1991. He held this position for more than 20 years before retiring in 2012. Under his leadership, Tata Group’s revenues grew significantly, with high-profile acquisitions such as Tetley, Jaguar Land Rover and Corus transforming Tata from a primarily India-centric company into a global brand.

His tenure was marked by his commitment to ethics and corporate social responsibility. In retirement, he remains actively involved in philanthropy and venture capital investments. His charity work is carried out through the Tata Trust, a charitable trust donated by members of the Tata family.

It has received numerous awards and recognition, including the highest civil awards in India, such as the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. These honor his contributions to trade and industry.

Ritesh Agarwal

A successful Indian entrepreneur, Ritesh Agarwal is known as the founder and CEO of OYO Rooms, a leading hospitality company that revolutionized the Indian hotel industry.

Born in 1993 in the small town of Bissam Katak, Orissa, India, Agarwal has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I started selling SIM cards when I was 13 and moved to Delhi with the intention of starting something of my own. Initially, he enrolled at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), but dropped out after one year to focus on entrepreneurship.

When I was 18 and traveling all over India on a limited budget, I noticed a huge gap in the Indian hospitality industry: the lack of quality accommodations at affordable prices. To solve this problem, he started Oravel Stays in 2012, then pivoted and rebranded to OYO Rooms in 2013. The company will partner with independent hotels and guesthouses, upgrade them to OYO standards and then incorporate them under the OYO brand.

His efforts paid off when OYO Rooms rapidly spread across India and later into international markets. As of 2023, OYO operates in more than 80 countries, offering more than 43,000 hotels and 1.5 million rooms. Despite the challenges, Agarwal’s leadership and entrepreneurial spirit led the company to become a global hospitality giant.

An environment where IITs foster entrepreneurship

The quality of educational programs, competition among students, and relationships with faculty all contribute to developing entrepreneurial perspectives and skills. In particular, students learn both the latest science and technology and business skills after passing extremely competitive entrance exams. There is no doubt that an environment of friendly competition among students and the ability to receive direct advice from faculty members will foster their willingness to take on challenges and innovative thinking.

Therefore, the entrepreneurs coming out of the Indian Institute of Technology have not only technical knowledge but also the ability and creativity to overcome difficulties.
